Bumps, scrapes and injuries are a natural part of life - especially when we’re growing. However, losing a tooth can be a more worrying (and expensive) accident for both children and parents. If when playing sports or messing around at home you lose a tooth, you should always visit a dentist. However, there are some steps you can take before you visit your local dentist. Here is a brief guide on what to do if a tooth is knocked out.
First and foremost, always try to locate a tooth which has been knocked out. If you have your tooth, there is a chance that you will be able to re-insert it. Without it, you’ll have to get an artificial tooth.
Handle With Care, Clean and Replace
Once you’ve found your tooth, you must handle it with care and clean it properly before attempting to re-insert it. You should only ever hold it by the white piece of the tooth which protrudes from above the gum. Never hold the root of the tooth. If the tooth is dirty, you should lick it clean or run it under cold water for 10 seconds. Then you can attempt to re-insert it into the gum.
Keep It Safe Before Visiting The Dentist
If your tooth does not fit back into the gum, you can keep it in a container full of either milk or saliva. This will keep your tooth protected before visiting the professionals. Alternatively, you can keep the tooth in your mouth for protection on the way to the dental practice.
In all cases, it’s worth visiting the dentist for them to check up on your tooth and ensure it’s been re-inserted correctly.
