While ageing affects all of us, it doesn't mean we have to just let it happen. Skin loses its strength over time, which can lead to redness, pigmentation, folds and wrinkles begin to form. But with modern science and easy treatments, we know exactly how to keep our faces looking fresh and young for much longer.

Here are some tips for keeping your face fresh.

Sunscreen

You should constantly be thinking about protecting your skin from the sun, even on days when it is grey or hazy. Sunrays can lead to premature ageing, so you want to protect against them. Wear sunscreen or moisturiser with SPF every day, with higher SPF on days when the sun is out.

If you love to tan, consider using a self-tanner instead of natural tanning or using a sunbed. This will give you a great looking tan but not expose your skin to harmful UV rays.

Food & Drink

Try to eat a healthy balanced diet full of fresh fruit or vegetables. A diet with too much sugar or carbohydrates can make your skin age faster. Alcohol dehydrates the skin, so try to cut down and drink more water instead to get fresher skin.

Moisturise Daily

Apply a facial moisturiser to your skin every day, as this will trap water in your skin and give it a more youthful glow. Just be wary that using too much moisturiser can actually do more damage than good, as it can clog your pores which will lead to black and whiteheads. Your skin can also become dry, which is the opposite of what you’re trying to achieve with moisturiser. Try to just moisturise once a day, using a normal amount of it.

Exercising

Exercising is great for your skin, improving circulation and boosting your immune system. If you have been exercising, make sure you wash your face afterwards instead of just wiping the sweat away. Perspiration can affect your skin, so you should wash your skin after exercise or after you have been perspiring.

When you’re washing your face make sure you do so gently. Scrubbing your skin too hard can irritate your skin and accelerate ageing. So just wash gently to remove substances from your skin without irritating it.

Facial Aesthetics

You can keep yourself looking young with a range of facial aesthetic treatments. This could be softening fine lines with injections, cheek augmentation, facial line softening or lip augmentation. These types of procedures are simple and easy ways to keep your face looking fresh and youthful.

Vaping is a relatively new phenomenon that has increased in popularity significantly in the past decade. Many use it as a way to wean off cigarettes but some people are becoming addicted to e-cigarettes at a young age. Smoking is widely recognised as a very unhealthy habit, causing gum disease, tooth loss, staining and even oral cancer, whereas vaping is considered a healthier alternative. However, how much damage is being done by vaping? Read on to learn more. Can vaping cause gum disease? While the effects of vaping are not yet known for certain, here is what we do know about smoking nicotine. - Nicotine causes vasoconstriction which means that your gum has a poor blood supply. Ultimately, this can make your gums more prone to infection and lead to gum recession. - Smoking will also dry out your mouth which means your mouth loses its first line of defence against bacteria. Gum disease is caused by bacteria getting under your gum line which is more likely if you have lower levels of saliva. - Generally, your immune system is lowered if you are a smoker which means infectious diseases such as gum disease are more likely to occur. What ingredients should you avoid? When choosing an e-cigarette fluid, there are some ingredients that have known negative side effects. These include: - Nicotine - Propylene glycol - Menthol It’s also worth noting that flavoured e-liquids can cause even more inflammation of your gums than non-flavoured e-liquids. How can you minimise the side effects of vaping? There are ways to look after your teeth that can help reduce the impact of vaping on your teeth. These include: - Limiting nicotine intake. Try to pick low-nicotine or nicotine-free juices as nicotine will affect your teeth and gums over time. - Drink water every time you vape. This will help you avoid dry mouth and rehydrate you after vaping. - Brush your teeth at least twice a day. Brushing removes plaque to help prevent cavities and promote overall gum health. - Floss before bed. Similarly to brushing, flossing helps remove plaque and promotes gum health. - Visit your local dentist often. Your dentist can help ensure your teeth are still in good condition and let you know when you need any work done. You can also get teeth whitening treatments to get rid of any stains.
