Keeping your smile looking great takes work. With our sugary and acidic diets, our teeth are constantly bombarded with stuff that can lead to problems further down the line, so having good dental hygiene is essential. However, sometimes even vigilant dental care isn’t enough to stop an issue from occurring. If you find yourself in this situation, you’ll need to make a visit to a professional dentist.

Even though visiting the dentist is part and parcel when it comes to keeping your smile looking its best, there are a surprising number of people that will delay their visit or not go at all. This can be for a variety of reasons, from ignoring the problem to a genuine phobia of the dentist. Indeed, ‘dentophobia’ affects around 25% of the UK population in some form or another. However, in not investing in expert dental surgery, you could be putting your teeth and even your general health at risk.

With this in mind, we at Manor Road Dental Practice are here to put your dental qualms to rest and talk about the main reasons you should look to the experts when it comes to keeping your smile shining.

The risks of leaving it be

As we’ve already mentioned, going to the dentist can sometimes feel like a pain. If you’re on top of your brushing, flossing and mouthwash, it can feel as though booking yourself in for a regular dental appointment can be a waste of money. However, in not seeing a professional you’re inviting problems to begin affecting your teeth. For example, one of the most common ailments, gum disease, can appear much more easily than you might expect, leading to other more serious problems like cavities. These problems are already in motion before you even realise an issue, so by the time you’re feeling pain, it may already be too late. With this in mind, it’s important to have a professional check-up in order to catch any growing problems with your teeth and rectify them before they become any worse.

Also, having a professional clean on a bi-annual basis is imperative in fighting back some of the more stubborn problems of oral health. One of the main culprits is the buildup of tartar on your teeth, a sticky, difficult to remove film that can only be cleaned by the specialist equipment at your local dentist.

Whatever the reason, make sure never to ignore any niggling problems with your teeth; you only get one set so why take the risk?

Signs you need expert dental surgery

Unfortunately, we can just get unlucky when it comes to our oral health, leading to the need for dental surgery. However, in order to catch a serious problem before it gets worse, there are some definite signs to look out for.

One of the main indications of a more serious problem is bleeding gums. Of course, a small amount of bleeding isn’t a definite cause for concern. However, bleeding is an early sign of gum disease and if the problem becomes worse, or you’re feeling a pain in your gums, this is a sure sign you need to visit the dentist as soon as possible. Gum disease is an ailment which works in stages and, if not caught early enough, can irrevocably damage your teeth and gums.

Another thing to keep an eye out for is a sudden metallic taste in your mouth. If you have previously had surgery on your teeth, you may already have fillings in place. The metallic taste you may be suddenly experiencing is a sign that one of these fillings has either become loose or has cracked. If this is the case, it’s essential to see an emergency dentist as soon as possible as a cavity left behind is prone to damage and infection.

There are also more subtle symptoms that you may put down to other health factors. Fatigue, although a symptom of a variety of ailments, can be a sign of a problem with your oral health. Infections in your mouth could be putting your immune system to work, causing you to feel tired; this is the same with frequent and long-lasting canker sores. If you’re unsure why you feel so drained, a quick trip to the dentist can check to see if further surgery is needed

There is a myriad of reasons why you might need comprehensive dental surgery. Therefore it’s really important to seek out the experts if you notice any changes in your dental health.

What can a professional dental care clinic offer?
Sometimes it might not be an emergency appointment or a check-up that brings you to the dental surgeon. There are actually a variety of services and procedures that an expert dentist can offer their patients. For those looking to enhance the look of their smile, there a range of cosmetic procedures to choose from. Teeth whitening is a popular choice for many looking to rejuvenate their smile, clearing away any stains and discolouration caused by day to day life. Veneers too are becoming increasingly popular. These small porcelain shells can cover any stains, chips or uneven teeth, meaning you can be confident in your smile again.

If you’re looking for more permanent fixes to your teeth, there are a range of options that your dentist may offer. Aligners and braces can be especially useful at straightening crooked teeth in a more permanent fashion. For those who feel uncomfortable about gaps in their teeth, dental implants and dentures may be viable options.

Dental tips to keep you smiling

Of course, it's important to have regular check-ups with your dentist to ensure that your teeth are as healthy as possible. However, making sure you’re adhering to good quality dental hygiene is the best way to tackle day to day attacks on your gums and teeth. Here are some tips from us at Manor Road Dental to help you keep your teeth looking great.

Making sure to brush twice a day for two minutes is just half the battle if you’re not brushing in an effective way. To start with, position the brush at a 45-degree angle to the gumline. Make sure that the brush is touching both the gums and the teeth and brush in an up and down - back and forth motion, ensuring to be gentle to stop the chance of any excess damage to your gums. Repeat this process around all of your teeth, making sure to reach the back.

It’s something we always seem to forget and are told off about at the dentist, but flossing is really important in getting rid of food and other harmful substances that are lodged between your teeth. Flossing gets at the places your toothbrush can’t so make sure to floss at least once a day.

Brushing your tongue may sound a bit odd but, like flossing, it’s an important part of your dental routine. Bacteria can build up on your tongue, leading to bad breath and the spread of bacteria to the rest of your mouth. Tongue cleaners are relatively cheap and can save you a lot of hassle.

The hardest part of keeping your teeth healthy is the cutting down on things that could damage them. Sugary food and drinks, alcohol and cigarettes all have a detrimental effect on your oral health so if you want to keep your smile looking great, look at ways you can cut back.

Vaping is a relatively new phenomenon that has increased in popularity significantly in the past decade. Many use it as a way to wean off cigarettes but some people are becoming addicted to e-cigarettes at a young age. Smoking is widely recognised as a very unhealthy habit, causing gum disease, tooth loss, staining and even oral cancer, whereas vaping is considered a healthier alternative. However, how much damage is being done by vaping? Read on to learn more. Can vaping cause gum disease? While the effects of vaping are not yet known for certain, here is what we do know about smoking nicotine. - Nicotine causes vasoconstriction which means that your gum has a poor blood supply. Ultimately, this can make your gums more prone to infection and lead to gum recession. - Smoking will also dry out your mouth which means your mouth loses its first line of defence against bacteria. Gum disease is caused by bacteria getting under your gum line which is more likely if you have lower levels of saliva. - Generally, your immune system is lowered if you are a smoker which means infectious diseases such as gum disease are more likely to occur. What ingredients should you avoid? When choosing an e-cigarette fluid, there are some ingredients that have known negative side effects. These include: - Nicotine - Propylene glycol - Menthol It’s also worth noting that flavoured e-liquids can cause even more inflammation of your gums than non-flavoured e-liquids. How can you minimise the side effects of vaping? There are ways to look after your teeth that can help reduce the impact of vaping on your teeth. These include: - Limiting nicotine intake. Try to pick low-nicotine or nicotine-free juices as nicotine will affect your teeth and gums over time. - Drink water every time you vape. This will help you avoid dry mouth and rehydrate you after vaping. - Brush your teeth at least twice a day. Brushing removes plaque to help prevent cavities and promote overall gum health. - Floss before bed. Similarly to brushing, flossing helps remove plaque and promotes gum health. - Visit your local dentist often. Your dentist can help ensure your teeth are still in good condition and let you know when you need any work done. You can also get teeth whitening treatments to get rid of any stains.
