How Do Clear Aligners Straighten Teeth?

Clear aligners

Clear aligners are a less invasive method of teeth straightening and a great alternative to standard metal braces. Perhaps at a later age you have decided you would like to straighten your teeth, or maybe you just need to make a few tweaks to maintain a beautiful smile. While they achieve similar results to orthodontic braces, clear aligners work in a vastly different way.

Since their invention around 20 years ago, clear aligners have become a popular method for teeth straightening. But how do they work?

What is aligner technology?

Clear aligners were created to improve the experience of teeth straightening, offering an almost invisible and removable alternative to braces. Aligner technology uses thin, transparent plastic shells to adjust teeth gradually. A series of manufactured aligners will be created from virtual models of your teeth to adjust them with each new aligner, and will often take between 10-50 aligners. They are changed at much shorter intervals than braces, usually every 1-2 weeks. You’ll need to wear your aligners for at least 22 hours a day to be effective. This gives you time to eat, brush and floss while the aligners are out.

How long it takes to achieve your desired smile will depend on the complexity of your bite. They can fix crowded teeth, overbites, underbites, open bites and diastema (gaps between the teeth). Although severe cases that are a bit more challenging may require conventional braces.

How do aligners work?

Your teeth will be shifted a little more each time you get a new aligner. Aligners are a bit more complex than just the plastic shells though. Attachments are used to create small pressure points on the teeth. These are tooth-coloured bumps that will be bonded to your teeth and help assert pressure from the aligners and push them in the right direction.

Over the 7-14 days that you wear an aligner it will be pushing your teeth into a different position. While your teeth may be in the right placement after one day, you keep wearing the aligner so that the ligaments connecting your teeth to the sockets can be shifted and adjust to the new position of your teeth.

Clear aligners are a great alternative to conventional orthodontics. You’ll be able to enjoy a brand new smile with less pain and limitations and it’s likely no one will even notice you’re having dental work done.

Vaping is a relatively new phenomenon that has increased in popularity significantly in the past decade. Many use it as a way to wean off cigarettes but some people are becoming addicted to e-cigarettes at a young age. Smoking is widely recognised as a very unhealthy habit, causing gum disease, tooth loss, staining and even oral cancer, whereas vaping is considered a healthier alternative. However, how much damage is being done by vaping? Read on to learn more. Can vaping cause gum disease? While the effects of vaping are not yet known for certain, here is what we do know about smoking nicotine. - Nicotine causes vasoconstriction which means that your gum has a poor blood supply. Ultimately, this can make your gums more prone to infection and lead to gum recession. - Smoking will also dry out your mouth which means your mouth loses its first line of defence against bacteria. Gum disease is caused by bacteria getting under your gum line which is more likely if you have lower levels of saliva. - Generally, your immune system is lowered if you are a smoker which means infectious diseases such as gum disease are more likely to occur. What ingredients should you avoid? When choosing an e-cigarette fluid, there are some ingredients that have known negative side effects. These include: - Nicotine - Propylene glycol - Menthol It’s also worth noting that flavoured e-liquids can cause even more inflammation of your gums than non-flavoured e-liquids. How can you minimise the side effects of vaping? There are ways to look after your teeth that can help reduce the impact of vaping on your teeth. These include: - Limiting nicotine intake. Try to pick low-nicotine or nicotine-free juices as nicotine will affect your teeth and gums over time. - Drink water every time you vape. This will help you avoid dry mouth and rehydrate you after vaping. - Brush your teeth at least twice a day. Brushing removes plaque to help prevent cavities and promote overall gum health. - Floss before bed. Similarly to brushing, flossing helps remove plaque and promotes gum health. - Visit your local dentist often. Your dentist can help ensure your teeth are still in good condition and let you know when you need any work done. You can also get teeth whitening treatments to get rid of any stains.
