Teeth Whitening: Prevention and Cure

Before and after teeth whitening

If you are thinking about getting your teeth whitened or having dental implants, Swansea gives you a lot of options. Having bad teeth or teeth with an appearance that you are unhappy with can have a very bad effect on your mental health , so keeping your teeth in an aesthetically good condition is almost as important as their practical function.

So if you’re concerned about how your teeth look or perhaps want them shining and white for this summer on Swansea beach , here is how you can prevent or cure your discoloured teeth and bring back their original sheen.

How Do Teeth Become Discoloured?

Teeth become discoloured in two different ways; extrinsic and intrinsic. Extrinsic discolouration is caused by environmental factors such as drinking coffee, tea, red wine, eating certain fruits, or smoking. Intrinsic discolouration is when the inner part of the tooth darkens. This is usually caused by physical trauma such as injuring yourself falling over or being overexposed to fluoride when a child.

How To Keep Your Teeth White

Brushing

It might seem obvious but maintaining an effective, consistent and regular brushing regime is key to keeping your pearly whites exactly that. Brushing regularly removes the buildup of plaque while investment in an electric toothbrush can make your brushing even more effective. You should be aware, however, that your enamel naturally wears down with age which allows your teeth’s yellowish dentin to become more visible.

Flossing

Some people have never flossed, while others consider it a part of their normal brushing regime. Flossing keeps your teeth healthy which contributes to keeping your teeth their natural colour. You can also buy special whitening floss if you really want to keep on top of your teeth discolouration.

Changing Your Diet

Everybody loves that glass of red wine at the end of the day or that Starbucks before work, but what if these lovely drinks are making your gnashers yellow? Making sensible substitutions to maintain the shining white tone of your teeth could be the way forward for you. Instead of Cabernet Sauvignon in the evening, why not have a vodka and lemonade? Rather than a flat white, why not white tea?

How A Good Dentist Can Make Your Teeth White Again

Professional clean

This is a relatively simple procedure that can be effective on mild extrinsic stains. For heavier stains or intrinsic discolouration, other methods may be required.

Bleaching

Bleaching can take several treatments over a number of weeks but is very effective. The process is done by the dentist making a mold of your teeth which can then be worn at home with a bleaching gel.

Laser

Laser whitening is more expensive than other treatments but it is the most effective. The treatment involves applying a bleaching product to the teeth which is activated by the application of a laser. The treatment is completed in just 60 minutes.

Vaping is a relatively new phenomenon that has increased in popularity significantly in the past decade. Many use it as a way to wean off cigarettes but some people are becoming addicted to e-cigarettes at a young age. Smoking is widely recognised as a very unhealthy habit, causing gum disease, tooth loss, staining and even oral cancer, whereas vaping is considered a healthier alternative. However, how much damage is being done by vaping? Read on to learn more. Can vaping cause gum disease? While the effects of vaping are not yet known for certain, here is what we do know about smoking nicotine. - Nicotine causes vasoconstriction which means that your gum has a poor blood supply. Ultimately, this can make your gums more prone to infection and lead to gum recession. - Smoking will also dry out your mouth which means your mouth loses its first line of defence against bacteria. Gum disease is caused by bacteria getting under your gum line which is more likely if you have lower levels of saliva. - Generally, your immune system is lowered if you are a smoker which means infectious diseases such as gum disease are more likely to occur. What ingredients should you avoid? When choosing an e-cigarette fluid, there are some ingredients that have known negative side effects. These include: - Nicotine - Propylene glycol - Menthol It’s also worth noting that flavoured e-liquids can cause even more inflammation of your gums than non-flavoured e-liquids. How can you minimise the side effects of vaping? There are ways to look after your teeth that can help reduce the impact of vaping on your teeth. These include: - Limiting nicotine intake. Try to pick low-nicotine or nicotine-free juices as nicotine will affect your teeth and gums over time. - Drink water every time you vape. This will help you avoid dry mouth and rehydrate you after vaping. - Brush your teeth at least twice a day. Brushing removes plaque to help prevent cavities and promote overall gum health. - Floss before bed. Similarly to brushing, flossing helps remove plaque and promotes gum health. - Visit your local dentist often. Your dentist can help ensure your teeth are still in good condition and let you know when you need any work done. You can also get teeth whitening treatments to get rid of any stains.
