The festive season is officially upon us, which means it’s time to spend time with our loved ones and take a well-deserved break from work. During this time, we tend to let loose and break our regular habits, including drinking more alcohol and enjoying the occasional sweet treat. While this is certainly the time to relax and enjoy yourself, it’s important not to let your healthy habits slip - especially when it comes to your teeth!
To help you keep your teeth healthy this festive season, we’ve put together some of our top tips.
Keep up your tooth brushing routine
This is the season of busy social calendars, which means we often sleep less and put our bodies through more stress than we usually would. To make sure your teeth don’t suffer as a result, keep up your standard tooth brushing routine. Make sure you brush your teeth at least twice a day (no matter what time you get home from your office party!) and don’t forget to floss.
Avoid snacking throughout the day
At this time of year, it’s very difficult to say no to the delectable Christmas treats on offer. From mince pies to candy canes, we are often bombarded by sweet treats at office parties, carol services and when visiting friends. If you’re going to graze on lots of different snacks, try to confine your eating to specific periods of the day, such as at lunchtime or after dinner. That way, you can brush your teeth afterwards, instead of leaving your teeth coated in sugar throughout the day.
During the Christmas period, it can be tempting to drink glasses of bubbly and mugs of mulled wine throughout the week, as well as on the weekend. Unfortunately, as alcohol has such a high sugar content, these Christmas tipples could be damaging your teeth. To protect your teeth, consider cutting down on your alcohol intake or drinking through a straw.
